The room remains unchanged. The light holds its position without effort. The phone, however, has altered the balance of the space without moving at all.
Husband (still seated, quieter now):
…
(he reaches for the phone — not quickly, not hesitant — just when the moment arrives)
(screen unlocks)
(no sound — just reading)
Wife (from the bed, not turning):
You are going to read it eventually.
Husband:
I am.
Wife:
Then do not make a performance out of waiting.
(a pause — he exhales, finishes reading)
Wife:
Well.
Husband (measured):
It is nothing immediate.
Wife:
That is not what I asked.
Husband:
It is… someone trying to be clever.
Wife:
Clever how.
Husband:
They think they have something.
Wife:
Do they.
Husband (after a pause):
Yes.
(long silence — not shocked, not surprised)
Wife:
And what do they want.
Husband:
Control of timing.
Wife:
Not money.
Husband:
No.
Wife:
That is worse.
The kitchen returns to its pattern. Nothing is displaced. Nothing announces the shift that has already occurred.
Wife (already dressed, same as before):
You are going in today.
Husband:
Of course.
Wife:
You will go in the same way you always do.
Husband:
Yes.
Wife:
You will not respond.
Husband:
I was not planning to.
Wife:
Do not plan. Decide.
Husband:
I will not respond.
Wife:
Good.
(she places a plate in front of him — steady, deliberate)
Wife:
You will forward anything you receive to me.
Husband (slight hesitation):
To you.
Wife:
Yes.
Husband:
Not legal.
Wife:
Not yet.
Husband:
You.
Wife:
Yes.
(a pause — this is the moment of transfer)
Husband:
Alright.
The building receives him as it always has. Routine restores shape where uncertainty had begun to thin it.
Colleague:
You look more like yourself today.
Husband:
I am.
Colleague:
Whatever yesterday was.
Husband:
Yesterday is handled.
Colleague:
Handled how.
Husband (flat):
By not being yesterday.
The house is quiet in a different way now. Not empty. Directed.
(phone in front of her — not his)
(she reads — more than one message now)
Wife (softly, to herself):
You should have come differently.
(she types — stops — deletes)
(types again — shorter)
(send)
The porch holds the same air. The same light. The same expectation of conversation.
Wife:
It is simple.
Husband:
Tell me.
Wife:
They want leverage.
Husband:
Yes.
Wife:
We give them structure.
Husband:
Structure.
Wife:
They do not release anything.
Husband:
And in return.
Wife:
They get nothing visible.
Husband:
That is not how this works.
Wife:
That is how this one will.
The room returns to stillness, but not to uncertainty.
Husband:
I trust you.
Wife:
I know.
Husband:
Tell me what to do.
Wife:
Go to work.
Husband:
And here.
Wife:
Get a new whatever type of device you want tomorrow, of course, please get one that you can use for calling and messaging. Leave this one with me.
(he sets the phone down — not his side anymore)
(she does not pick it up immediately)
